A [wind turbine] circuit feature which gradually increases the power output from a converter when it is powered-up.

[Soft-start] minimises stresses on the power circuit components by eliminating uncontrolled voltage or current surges.

All turbines are re-fitted with a modern controller which is more operationally sophisticated than those originally supplied with the turbines. These include soft start features, which greatly protect the generator and drive system of the turbine.

Démarrage souple avec des thyristors. Si [l'on connectait] une grande éolienne au réseau en appuyant sur un interrupteur normal, [on observerait] un obscurcissement partial (à cause du courant nécessaire pour magnétiser la génératrice) suivi d'une crête de puissance due à la transmission au réseau du courant produit par la génératrice [...] Afin d'éviter cette situation, les éoliennes modernes sont conçues pour démarrer doucement. On emploie donc des thyristors pour assurer leur connexion (ou déconnexion) graduelle au réseau. Un thyristor est un type de semi-conducteur fonctionnant comme un interrupteur à progression continue [...] Les thyristors perdent environ 1 à 2 % de l'énergie qui les traverse. Les éoliennes modernes sont donc normalement munies d'un disjoncteur de dérivation, c.-à-d. un interrupteur actionné après le démarrage souple de l'éolienne. Ainsi, on assure que la perte d'énergie est minime.
